Nigeria's Buchi Emecheta Dies At 72

Renowned London-based Nigerian novelist, Buchi Emecheta (born Florence Onyebuchi Emeheta), known for her great works including; Second-Class Citizen and The Joys of Motherhood, has died in London on 25th January 2017 at the age of 72. Buchi, who was born on 21st July 1944 in Lagos State, hails from Ibusa, Delta State, in the Niger-Delta region of Southern Nigeria.

Growing up, Buchi lived under the threat of gender discrimination as her younger brother was sent to school while her education was said to have been delayed. She also had a troubled marriage with a husband who did not encourage her dream of writing. Most of her writings are seen to reflect the heart of the girl-child and the woman folk which seeks to get a balanced place in the society.

Her notable works (among others) include:
    • Second-Class Citizen (Novel)
    • The Bride Price (Novel)
    • The Joys of Motherhood (Novel)
    • Head Above Water (Autobiography)

She is an alumna of the University of London, where she earned both a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology (1972) and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (1991). Until her death, Buchi, who is a visiting professor, has held prominent career positions in academics and administration while working in a number of institutions in the UK and Nigeria, for which she earned several awards.

She is remembered by her family, Nigeria and the world.
